Recuperated Material Monuments, 2018. Indigo dyed, layered, salvaged textiles (bedsheets), 16 pieces. Exhibited at Onespace Gallery, Highgate Hill, Brisbane, March 2019.
Old sheets from thrift shops are hand-dyed with natural indigo, layered in shades of blue, hand-cut into pillars and presented as a portal. These textiles, already from paddock to product , worn thin and discarded, then diverted from landfill, become monuments to a relationship between nature and culture. Imitating natural forms, of sediment built up over time, the slow and meditative labour and alchemical processes of the dye vat, present connections with material and histories, while blue provides the visual link to one of nature’s most abstract concept, the colour of sky and sea.
These works are photographic stills. They can be printed and framed in a range of sizes and frame options such as those above.
